15 January 2025 - Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) is committed to providing its international students with enriching cultural experiences, and a recent Batik Canting workshop at Penang’s Youth Park Information Centre perfectly exemplified this commitment. Following their participation in “CIAC Nature’s Call: Hike & Heal The Environment,” the Centre for International Affairs and Cooperation (CIAC) gathered 28 international students for an engaging cultural activity: Batik Canting.
The event began with an informative presentation by Mr. Mohd Azri Abdul Aziz, Assistant Director of CIAC, who provided an overview of the history and significance of Batik canting, an iconic traditional art form in Malaysia. Participants gained insights into the intricate process of creating batik patterns, from applying hot wax to fabric to the vibrant coloring techniques that bring the designs to life. Following the presentation, the students participated in an interactive Batik canting and coloring activity, guided step-by-step to create their own batik masterpieces under the expertise of local Batik artist, Madam Rosnah Ishak.
The session highlighted CIAC’s dedication to enhancing the international students’ experience at UUM by introducing them to Malaysia’s diverse traditions. Activities like Batik canting enable students to engage with local culture, build cross-cultural connections, and develop a sense of belonging within the community.Through this hands-on approach, participants left with not only artistic creations but also newfound knowledge and cherished memories, enriching their overall educational journey at UUM.
